A letter from American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall to Minnesota Farmfest Attendees

In the beginning of August, I met with members of the House Agriculture Committee as part of their visit to IDEAg’s Minnesota Farmfest in Redwood Falls. The committee held a listening session on the 2018 farm bill, creating a platform for local farmers and ranchers to share their stories, their concerns and insights about what keeps them up at night. Because farmers and ranchers make up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, we must continue to engage. We must carry forward the conversations we had during Minnesota Farmfest about how decisions being made on farm policy affect our livelihoods.

The American Farm Bureau Federation has gathered resources to help navigate the tricky waters of the complicated farm bill issue. Visit our webpage, Farm Bureau Resources In-Depth, for summaries like Myths and Facts about Farmers and Farm Policy to easily share while you engage with others. You can also explore topics such as commodity program provisions and farm bill issues like dairy or livestock provisions. AFBF also put together the Farm Bill on the Fly series—one-to-two-minute videos that help spur the conversation.

We have a long way to go before the 2018 farm bill is completed. We hope a new farm bill will be passed by next August but, either way, Minnesota Farmfest is the perfect place to continue the conversation about farm policy and other agricultural issues and see the newest and best cutting-edge technology available to the American farmer. So, join us August 7-9, 2018.. By engaging in the conversation you will help mold the future of American agriculture.
